"There are many men of principle in both parties in America, but there is no party of principle." ~ Alexis de Tocqueville
"What is conservatism? Is it not the adherence to the old and tried against the new and untried?" ~ Abraham Lincoln

The people must also be self-assertive. They must have the spirit of the old Revolutionary War flag: "Don't tread on me!" They must be vigilant against those, at home or abroad, in or out of government, who might wish to trample on their rights. They must be courageous and manly, with a sense of honor, so that in hard times they will stand up and fight, and not slink away slavishly so as to avoid trouble and danger.
Thomas G. West and Douglas A. Jeffrey, The Rise & Decline of Constitutional Government in America
The most important moral of all is that excellence is where you find it. I would extend this generalization to cover not just higher education but all education from vocational high school to graduate school. We must learn to honor excellence, indeed to demand it in every socially accepted human activity, however humble that activity, and to scorn shoddiness, however exalted the activity. An excellent plumber is infinitely more admirable than an incompetent philosopher. The society which scorns excellence in plumbing because plumbing is a humble activity and tolerates shoddiness in philosophy because philosophy is an exalted activity will have neither good plumbing nor good philosophy. Neither its pipes nor its theories will hold water. --- John William Gardner (1912 - )
Our Founding Fathers were greatly influenced by a rather lengthly treatise on the subject of freedom, The Spirit of Laws, by Charles Louis de Secondat, Baron de Montesquieu, published in 1748. COMMENTARY
By G T Baker
The National Education Association has on its web site a book on its "recommended reading" list titled Rules For Radicals (http://www.nea.org/tools/17231.htm), by Saul Alinsky. It isn't that Alinsky's book discusses societal changes in comparison to more conservative ideas. It is that Alinsky asserts that extreme radicalism is the only way to achieve changes in society. Conservative concepts are dismissed out of hand without any discussion of their merit. Should such closed mind ideas be taught to the students in our secondary schools, or should they be taught the broader points of view of examining all possible points of view before making decisions or modifying ones philosophies?
If that were not enough the Obama Administration is attempting to recruit and organize student volunteers into a group named "Organizing For America." Among the "recommended reading" list for volunteers is this list of gems:
* Rules for Radicals, Saul Alinsky
* The New Organizers, Zack Exley
* Stir It Up: Lessons from Community Organizing and Advocacy, Rinku Sen
* Obama Field Organizers Plot a Miracle, Zack Exley, Huffington Post
* Dreams of My Father Chicago Chapters, Barack Hussein Obama
Is that enough to shake you up? No? Well, read on, maybe this will do it: http://atlasshrugs2000.typepad.com/atlas_shrugs/2010/01/atlas-exclusive-obama-organizing-for-communism-and-youth-corps-in-the-public-school-1.html
The bottom line for these publications is that they all profess the idea that "the ends justify the means." In other words as long as their aims are achieved anything, repeat, anything, is acceptable. That is the very same philosophy that existed in Nazi Germany and Communist Russia.
Somehow the word "subversive" comes to mind when looking at the things the NEA has been doing in the last few years. Is that an accurate assessment? There is a difference between indoctrination and education and this/these NEA programs are NOT being put in place for educational purposes. These programs are indoctrination pure and simple and as such they have no justifiable place in our education systems.
Are you a teacher who believes in personal responsibility and individual liberties. Then it time for you to run for offices within the NEA and help turn things around, OR, urge and support others who do to do it. Our nation's very liberty and our future depend upon it.
